This week I have been amazed at how the things we learn when we are younger stay with us. It might be a random theme tune to a cartoon you used to watch when you were small or it might be something else. I have surprised both myself and my fiance with my insane accuracy in naming a theme tune just by the opening few seconds to many a TV show I used to watch when I was a child. Some of these theme tunes I have not heard in over 30 years and yet they are still there, deep within the recesses of my brain.
It made me wonder why? Why after all these years can I still recite the theme tunes word for word to Poddington Peas or Gummi Bears or even Mighty Mouse?! Is it because the child I once was is still apart of me and sometimes we unlock the door to those memories and music from our past, conjuring up happier times when all we had to worry about was what our barbie doll was going to wear or the fact that back then we didn’t really know what worry was? There were none of the stresses of the adult world, that was left to others, our parents and other adults around us. We could just be children, playing and laughing and whiling away the days with fun and games and cartoons. Maybe these theme tunes are that part of me desperately hanging on to that little girl I once was.
I also found out that other forms of music have stayed with me. I dusted off my keyboard which I haven’t played in approximately 14 years this weekend and found I could still play a lot of the songs without any mistakes, even remembering the chords. This astounded me. I thought I would have to relearn everything I taught myself. I have to say this has been a good week for me with all these memories and old hobbies coming back to me like old friends reunited. I have even spent a good portion of the time writing which has meant the world to me. I feel almost re-energised with it this week. I may even finish my novel rewrite in 2016!
Perhaps my friends it’s time we all revisit something that made us smile? With that I think it’s time I watch Scooby Doo. (he always was my favourite)
