Love Over Matter

I have been reminded recently of the frailty of the human body but also of the strength of it’s spirit and how much love effects it. Coming into contact with a couple who are very much testament to that has made me believe wholeheartedly that if you have someone who loves you in your weakest or darkest moments then you have something very special indeed.

Having known each other since they were at school and with him in his 90’s and her in her later 80’s that is a long time indeed. They must know each other so well, they have seen one another age yet it doesn’t matter not in their eyes. When he walks into the room, I see the twinkle return even when she is feeling poorly.

I see how his hands shake continuously up until the moment he helps her to eat and then it’s as if something else takes over and his hands are as steady as a rock until he puts the bowl or cup back on the table. It is as if his love steadies him when it matters most and only returns the unsteadiness of old age when he is no longer needed to help her.

I love hearing other people’s stories, especially the elderly who rarely get the chance to tell theirs. For me it’s like keeping a piece of their story alive because I remember them. I carry them with me everywhere like a guardian of history, never to be forgotten. Our stories and our history’s live on in those we share them with and I have felt humbled and grateful that I have been given the chance to listen.

I can only hope that my stories whether fictional or not live on in just such a way.
