look up

Well…what can I say about this week? The events that have taken place over the last week have shaken us to the core but I guess these people have never heard of the British resilience, that “We shall not be moved” spirit that resides deep within us all.

Despite so much tragedy, loss, heartache, a fire has been lit. That spark of defiance, that nothing anyone can do will shake. The human spirit to survive to carry on in spite of everything else going on around them. We’ve heard stories of people offering beds for the night to complete strangers, taxis home everything and anything to those most in need. Bravery from people who may never have thought themselves capable of it until now.

Who knows what really goes on in the minds of these terrorists and what made them decide to take the actions they did. To someone out there they were someone’s son, someone’s daughter and they must be wondering where everything went wrong? How did the happy, smiling child they brought up become so hell bent on destruction? When we are born into this world we are not born with a gun or knife or any kind of explosives. Hatred was certainly not in my remit when I first entered this world.

So what happened? How did their thoughts get so turned around? Their beliefs that what they were doing was right? Surely an alarm bell must have rung in their head whilst they were strapping explosives fake or otherwise to their chests that this was not the actions of a normal person? Perhaps they even wondered where or when everything changed.

I sometimes wish I was a fly on the wall to hear some of these conversations, to help me understand it because I don’t. All i feel is sadness, sadness for the person they once were, the child with so much potential and the people whose lives they dramatically cut short. I feel worried for friends who will get tarnished with the same brush because people will invariably hit out at anyone who they think however misguidedly subscribes to the same remit of the terrorists.  Because they feel powerless to do anything else, but all this does is breed more hatred, more fear.

We need to stop looking down at people, it breeds suspicion, hatred and fear. We need to stop hiding behind religion as an excuse for judging people. Your neighbour might be different to you but that does not mean they are plotting your demise anymore than you are a member of the KKK or a Nazi sympathiser.

Love one another and look up, darkness has nowhere to hide in the light.
